Mark Nepo is one of my favorite authors for a number of reasons. Most notably, he’s an artisan at evocative storytelling that provides a bridge to familiar and shared human experiences that we can all personally relate.

In addition, Mark is a cancer survivor and my mom just completed her chemo treatments and had a chance to meet Mark a few month’s ago where she received an autographed copy of The Book of Awakening, Having The Life You Want By Being Present To The Life You Have.

Awakening has been my daily companion for a decade and ranks in my Spiritual Top 10 Book Reading List that includes, The Alchemist, by Paulo Coelho, A New Earth, Awakening To Your Life’s Purpose, by Eckhart Tolle, Autobiography of A Yogi, by Paramhansa Yogananda, Illusions, The Adventures of a Reluctant Messiah, by Richard Bach, The Artist’s Way, by Julia Cameron, The Five People You Meet in Heaven, by Mitch Albom, A Return to Love, by Marianne Williamson, The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success, by Deepak Chopra, and A Course in Miracles, by Helen Schucman.

Awakening provides 365 daily passages that include a central themed message for the day and a companion list of ideas to consider in meditation and/or in acting upon during that given day.   I do know some individuals that read the calendar’s corresponding day in the book and other’s that will randomly open a page to learn what “awakenings” are available to them that day. Either way you choose will provide the insights to reveal themselves for you.

For me, reading Awakening in the morning serves two distinct purposes. The first is in having a “ritual” and daily practice to simply take a few precious moments to center myself with the least amount of distractions. The second is that very rarely does a day go by that the messages within any given day’s passage is not serendipitously linked to events, activities and circumstances swirling about in my world at that moment. Side note… I simply love those precious “aha” moments when the stars align between the physical and spiritual world to bring that all telling smile to my face. Some call it coincidence, I call it divine intervention and inspiration!

Here’s where the “relationship” part comes into play. I encourage you to purchase The Book of Awakening if you don’t already own a copy. One of the profound joys for me is reading the daily passage to Dana each morning. We’ve certainly taken turns over the past few years reading a daily passage to each other, but this has become one of my sacred rituals that allows her to simply sit back, close her eyes, relax and absorb the message and meditation. We then take a few moments to share the respective relevance and impact of the message to each other that further solidifies this relationship ritual.

This is just one example of a Ritual in Relationships. As the book title reminds us, Having the Life You Want By Being Present To The Life You Have, is about recognizing the importance of all our sacred relationships we can nurture and make even better with lovers, family, and friends.

Let us know what you and your partner do for daily, weekly and/or monthly rituals that ignite and reinforce your relationship so we can share with the community.
