Don’t Be a Statistic of Divorce Monday

Don’t Be a Statistic of Divorce Monday

We recently learned that more people file for divorce or seek legal counsel about Divorce in January that any other time of the year.  In fact, the first Monday in January is called “Divorce Monday”. The trend in divorce filings continues through the beginning of the year into March.

There is plenty of speculation as to why this occurs.  People try to muddle through the holidays as a family navigating their way through Thanksgiving, Hanukah, Christmas and New Year’s before tearing the family unit apart.

On average, a person spends about two years thinking about divorce before taking action.  Both of these statistics are true for Dana.  She had spoken to Divorce attorneys at least two years prior to telling her husband she wanted a divorce. Struggling with how to amicably end her marriage and have the least amount of impact on her two boys and soon to be ex-husband.

Then on January 2nd she made her move.  After awkwardly getting through the holidays knowing it was the last they would spend together as a family, she told her husband she wanted a divorce.

Ironically, she had expressed her dissatisfaction in the marriage to her husband in October the year before and requesting that he attend a weekend retreat for couples to save their marriage. He had no interest at the time, but a few short months later he was now interested in doing whatever it took to save the marriage.  They tried for several months, but it appears there is a point of no return and sadly he waited too long.  She filed for divorce that Spring.

Let’s face it, the holiday season can be stressful with family and financial obligations looming during the holidays, not to mention finding the time to fit everything in.  It’s exhausting emotionally, mentally and physically.
